Faroese Children's Aid Liberia

Faroese Children's Aid Liberia.

Faroese Children’s Aid supports children and families in five countries. In four of these countries, we work in partnership with established local organisations. Liberia, however, has a different history.

We began working in Liberia only four years after the civil war had ended. Shortly afterwards, in April 2010, we had to end our cooperation with our local partner. As a result, Faroese Children’s Aid took on a more direct and extensive responsibility for ensuring the continuity and development of the work in Liberia.

The following years were challenging. Different people assisted us along the way, and considerable time and financial resources were spent on attempts to find a lasting and legally secure organisational structure.

For many years, we had hoped to establish a legally registered organisation in Liberia. With the valuable assistance of trusted people with extensive knowledge of the country, we were finally able to find a viable path towards formal registration.

In October 2022, we approached three trusted individuals in Liberia and asked them to become the founders of the new organisation:

P. Sumo-Varfee Molubah
Kerkula P. Jones
Anna Kaydor Labala

Their willingness to take on this responsibility made it possible to move forward. In March 2023, Faroese Children’s Aid Liberia – FCAL – was formally and legally registered in Liberia.

In May 2023, Rúna Sivertsen and Ólavur Asafsson Olsen travelled to Liberia, where they had the pleasure of meeting the three founders in person. This was an important and joyful milestone after many years of uncertainty and hard work.

From the establishment of FCAL in March 2023 until April 2026, when a board was appointed to take responsibility for the organisation, the three incorporators were responsible for overseeing FCAL.

We are deeply grateful to them for their dedication and valuable contribution, which helped ensure that all our work in Liberia was carried out in accordance with the country’s laws and regulations. Working across different cultures requires local knowledge, mutual understanding and trusted people.

The establishment of FCAL marked the beginning of a new chapter. It gave our work in Liberia a solid legal foundation and created better conditions for accountability, continuity and the long-term development of our support for children and families.
