The Philippines

Coat_of_arms_of_the_Philippines

The Philippines, in southeastern Asia, consists of 7,107 islands lying between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The islands of Luzon and Mindanao account for two-thirds of the land area. Even though the Philippines lies just north of the world’s largest Muslim state, Indonesia, it is about 94 percent Christian—mostly Roman Catholic. About five percent of Filipinos are Muslim, mostly living on the islands of Mindanao and Palawan—islands closest to the Muslim countries of Malaysia and Indonesia.

The population of the Philippines is estimated at 100,096,496 as of July 1 2014.

The work in Philippines is led by ABC USA.

Currently ABC USA is supporting schools in
Sinipsip, Abatan, Atok, Itogon and Shilan La Trinidad. In addition to
running a regular school, the ABC school in Shilan La Trinidad is also
catering to the educational needs of 60 physically and mentally challenged
children.

Manapla: A school for 240 children, nursery to grade 5, resumed in Manapla in June 2008. A huge population of children, coming from poor families, had been deprived of an opportunity to receive good education. ABC Children’s Aid has been able to renovate the school building and provide necessary furnitures and equipment for the smooth functioning of this school.

Bacolod: A school for another 180 children, nursery to grade 3, resumed in Bacolod city in June 2008. This school is serving indigent families living in and around Bacolod city. Currently ABC Children’s Aid is renting facilities from YMCA for this school. The leadership of YMCA has been so gracious to partner with ABC to help these indigent children who are living in the slum areas around the neighbourhood. The facilities needed to be renovated before the school could begin so ABC Children’s Aid gave funds for all the work and provided furnitures and other necessary equipments.

Pahanokoy: This is a community of re-located families who live way below poverty line. Parents could not afford to send their children to school so they wandered around whole day landing into different types of troubles and bad situations. Upon the request of a local pastor, a preschool has been started for 100 children. The school is being run in a church which had no cemented floor. ABC Children’s Aid provided funds for the floor and we are hoping to make further improvements in this building in future.
